The ath5k in backports-modules worked much better than the one we have
in the current ubuntu kernel but I think the new compat-wireless stack
is making trouble. I had the same backtraces in my dmesg as they were

I've now experienced a much better performance and no more error
messages in dmesg since I've installed the linux-backports-modules-
intrepid-generic package after Loïc Minier told in Bug #275692 that
there's a newer version of ath5k in the backports-modules pkg.
I've still blacklisted ath_pci.

I get these "unable to reset channel" and "noise floor calibration"

frequently in a few minutes and decrease my tranmission rates because

I can confirm the steps Christiansen mentioned. I have a fresh install
of hardy on a Thinkpad T61.
dev.wifi0.softled was already 1 but not dev.wifi0.ledpin! After enabling
it, wifi led works...
