Don't know if this helps, but I experienced exactly the described behavior
today. I am running ubuntu 9.10 amd64 desktop variant on a macbook 3,1.
If possible, I could provide any helpful information. On the other hand, I
understood this bug has been assigned to the xournal developers.

Since yesterday I had some more crashes at startup. Thus the problem still
remains. The logfile created by Udo's patch is attached, but it doesn't tell me
anything. I will probably switch to parcellite soon, which seems to work
perfectly.

I experienced this bug since I switched to gnome with intrepid. Tried
Udo Güngerichs patch today and no more crashes since then.
Congratulations to Udo so far, and I will keep watching it.
