Tested upstream kernel and the problem still exists:
[ 77.641299] usb 1-2: new full-speed USB device number 5 using xhci_hcd
[ 77.771405] usb 1-2: New USB device found, idVendor=1410, idProduct=2110
[ 77.771409] usb 1-2: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=0
[ 77.771410]
I think the problem is a leftover /etc/init.d/vboxdrv either from a
previous virtualbox install, removing that fixes it for me.

Public bug reported:
I have been using a Novatel USB720 successfully for years on Ubuntu -
after upgrading to 14.04 (then doing a complete clean install), I
continue to get this in my dmesg:
[ 4220.244259] usb 2-2: new full-speed USB device number 12 using xhci_hcd
[ 4220.374563] usb 2-2: New USB
Thanks @Michael
@Thomas, this must have taken about 2 mins to fix and would have saved
me hours of issues - this is not a typo but wrong documentation, anyhow
- thanks for at least letting me know.
