I get this if I have any CIFS folders mounted. Does it every single time
unless I remember to manually umount the CIFS folders before shutdown.

I had this problem as well/ I'm running soft raid with raid-0 on Intel
chipset. Upgrade all completed, but upon reboot I got grub_env_export
error.
The problem is that the upgrade did not create a dmraid initrd image. I
booted from live CD and CHROOTed.
Then did:
apt-get purge dmraid
apt-get ins
I get this when I press the Check button. It pops the dialog showing it
downloading the repositories. That dialog then exits, but update-manager
remains all just greyed out. It stays like this until I kill it.
If I run from the console I see the following error after the repository
download dial
I've just got it to work as well with the fix_dmraid.patch. I did not
have libdevmapper-dev and libfreetype6-dev installed. Put them on and
rebuilt and it worked.

I tried the fix_dmraid.patch, built grub2 from source and this still
fails for me.
I run update-grub and get the error:

Update to #53. I spoke too soon. Next time I rebooted it hung in exactly
the same way again. This is a real show stopper. My system just will not
boot with the latest official 2.6.32-24-generic kernel.

Hi.
I upgraded to 2.6.32-24-generic via update manager. The machine then
hung exactly as described in comment #49. I suspect the module build
failed as I couldn't find it in the 2.6.32-24 modules when I booted
using an older kernel.
I then upgraded my NVidia drivers to 256.35-0ubuntu2~xup from PP
I still have this problem too.
