I have same problem and was told it was puleseaudio. A workaround the
worked for me was to go into System > Preferences > Sound > Change all
to ALSA.

With more experimentation I have noticed that sometimes a blank screen
will come up on boot and other times it will be fine. This happens to
the livecd and the install on the HD. I cannot figure out why.
