shit, this has crippled my system. I can't install anything anymore.

I would like to note that twice, this bug surfaced after installing the
file syncing application dropbox, which modifies nautilus and might be
related somehow.
Fix #2 solved the issue.

I installed karmic UNR and everything was working fine. I upgrade to the
latest packages by doing "sudo apt-get upgrade" and now compiz fails to
start. Also, the UNR interface is considerably slower even with
metacity.
