I got the same error.
After getting into the session, I went to "system setting", and click
the "login" icon.
I chose the new theme as my kdm, and everything has been working great
since.

This has been fixed about 1 month after final release. It seemed like an
ALSA problem, as the problem was resolved after and ALSA update.

When I first encountered this, I upgraded from 8.04 to 8.10 and then got
the freeze on shutdown.
I have since did a fresh install, and I still get the freeze. The
freeze appears to be related to ALSA, as that appears to be the last
line before the freeze happens.

I couldn't get the hardware information by your directions, but it's a
compaq presario C700 laptop, and an emachines desktop computer about 3
years old.
