Gah, I feel like a bit of a tool. Turns out the password was incorrect. I was using the dmesg output to trace the error, which made no mention of failure to authenticate. Looks like I should be checking syslog instead. Thanks for your help Thomas! Looks like there is no bug after all! ** Changed
