Sorry the bug that I linked was with my other laptop. I installed gnome-
shell now and I have exactly the same problem using fglrx, ie the
interface is very slow and the mouse is sluggish. I will try it with the
free driver later.

I had the same problem, my graphic card is ATI HD 3430. I removed all

don't know if this is the same patch but you can install (force) the second one
and it will overwrite the other.
Open CompizConfig settings manager then General->General options->General and
uncheck "unredirect fullscreen windows" this can solve your problem (if it is
not related to the patch).
tested the xserver-no-backfill thing and it works perfectly for me in karmic.
what are the problems I may have with this package? just to check if I have
them.

I don't know if it is already mentionned. The problem is not only
related to compiz desktop effects it occurs also when enabling composite
manager in metacity (via gconf-editor). it's really annoying since awn
requires compositing :-(
