Hi.. same thing for me... gzopen works fine on my 9.04 but after update
to 9.10 it is not working:

Hi!
i'm trying to update my 9.04 to 9.10 using update-manager -d
It runs update process, changes my sources list and ended with error
message that it can not find ubuntu-minimal package. I'm sorry i'm using
Russian version of Ubuntu and can not actual message text.

download the file
then run:
sudo dpkg -i ; sudo apt-get -f
