I just had the same 'exception(?)' when taking the command 'sudo apt-get
upgrade'. I'd suppose this is no bug, due it lead not into an error
while the upgrade process ran, but it's IMHO a lack, missing feature,
whatever.

Same symptoms, same workaround, but I must also add that the same
machine ran Compiz quite nicely on Feisty and Hardy (enabled by
default), so I do not believe the hardware is incompatible with Compiz.
I suggest others here try booting from a Hardy desktop CD and see if it
runs with 'desktop effec

Per crimsun on IRC, I looked in ~/.xsession-errors (attached). Googled
it and found bug #277344, which suggested compiz may be a problem.
Removed compiz, and now I'm able to login fine.
Compiz worked fine for me in hardy.
Not sure if this bug is the same as #277344.
