My fault, please apologize.
I was using hplip-3.9.4b from hplipopensource.com instead of the older 2.8.2
from Ubuntu 8.04
I upgrated to the latest hplip-3.11.1 and all works fine.

I am using Ubuntu 9.10 with a notebook ASUS K50C.
I applied and tried almost every workaround proposed by this topic and some
other I found in the internet.
Nothing is working, so I am currently using a VESA configuration in xorg.conf,
of course this means that I am unable to run at 1366x768 reso

I dug a little bit and found the the cause of the problem and a quick
and dirty solution.
The reason:
Image Creator uses platform.dist() to determine the platform it's
running on. If you run 'python -c "import platform; print
platform.dist()"' on Ubuntu before 8.10, the result is something like
