I don't agree with this characterisation. This has been a long-running
system; it has been quietly sitting in the corner serving up music etc.. All
other machines still talk to the router.

I tried the Alternative install disk - then some of the crash
information was on the screen. All seemed to be concerned with ACPI and
a modeprobe. I turned off ACPI in the BIOS and now it works fine..

Ooops - in too much of a rush.
I have tried re-installing the printer - it is no longer detected. I
deleted it because all jobs were marked stopped after about a minute,
with no actual output. Sometimes deleting and reinstalling works not
this time. Prior to this problem I had not printed an
/etc/cups/cupsd.conf file.
