i'm using feisty. I'll maybe switch to gutsy when the new ATI drivers (the
proprietary not the OS ones) support my old R300 and AIGLX.

Again try these steps:
* choose clear looks
* change your desktop background and set style "tiled" !!!
* back to thememanager
** click on customize and change something (e.g. engine to "clearlooks") and go
back
** save the theme as "Test1" and choose to save the Back

I've just checked everything again. The speed with preview disabled is fine now:

< 1 sec to show my folders
< 1 sec for file-open dialoge (e.g. in gimp)
I now enabled preview again and it's still fast:

gnome/metacity settings to compiz:

To prevent hot-key related bugs, there should be list of gconf-keys
showing which metacity-settings can be presented by which compiz-
settings.
Adding this code to your /usr/bin/compiz, just BEFORE compiz.real is executed
will copy your metacity settings (desktop count and hotkeys) to compiz
