This problem appears to be resolved in Kubuntu 8.10 Release candidate. The boot process now starts kdm and KDE 4.1 does display - not with the best (1024x768) resolution for the savage chip, but with with an adequate resolution (800x600). This can probably be resolved by an adjustment in xorg.conf
