Interesting that this was supposed to have been incorporated into
Ubuntu, and therefore all the *buntu flavors since the end of 2021.
Well, up until this evening (28 May 2024) i have been able the simply
use dmesg, without sudo, in every Kubuntu distro I've used since then
and of course before then
It's a darn shame that "the powers that be" don't care to fix something
that is still of a great deal of importance to a few hundred thousand
people - *buntu users. I recently added a floppy drive to my machine.
It didn't work, but I just figured there was some package that didn't
get loaded. So
Please cancel this bug. When using Kubuntu Lucid Lynx, the system shuts
down normally when specifying "ACPI=FORCE" in the boot string. The BIOS
in my IBM T20 is just too old.

An update, and a step backwards.
I recently had to reinstall Kubuntu Lucid, which I did from a Shipit CD.
I now have a later kernel and an updated version of Lucid.

Sorry, that's no error, but it does sound suspiciously like a sales brochure.
Of course the ultimate error would be the sales pitch for the Microsoft

Thanks. And that's why I decided to invalidate this bug. It happens to some,
and not to others. My solution works for some, to some degree with others,
and not at all for still others.
You're right about the the message; whether you turn it off or not has no
bearing on the actual shutdown pr

run "lsmod" in a terminal. That will list your driver modules. Look for
snd-hda-intel. If that is running, then you may have that problem.

This seems to be unique to a very limited set of hardware -- perhaps
only my particular IBM T20 platform. As the solution is causing
confusion to others I am invalidating this bug and closing it. Thank

Thank you for confirming that the bug still exists.
To fix this problem on my laptop, I had to fix two scripts.
The first script I fixed is /etc/rc0.d/S90halt, where I commented out an "if"
sequence and then replaced the "halt" command, as noted below:

This problem appears to be resolved in Kubuntu 8.10 Release candidate.
The boot process now starts kdm and KDE 4.1 does display - not with the
best (1024x768) resolution for the savage chip, but with with an
adequate resolution (800x600). This can probably be resolved by an
adjustment in xorg.conf

result - flashing cursor, quiet machine.

Have continued to try testing in Alpha 6 using the Kubuntu as well as

Sorry. My bad. Attached are an lspci -vvnn and a dmesg. These were created

Thanks for your reply. Your solution is about the same as mine. Attached are
my /etc/modules, ../init.d/halt, and ../init.d/reboot solutions. Selecting
the "TurnOff" option from the Logoff menu works correctly, I'm not so good
with "Reboot", but that's O.k. as I don't go that route very often
I have reached a partial solution to this bug, for better or worse.
