When I played any video in the vlc player or any other player I can play
the video, but I get no sound. If I play any music it also works. If I
play youtube videos I also get sound and everything works just fine.

when I login I don't have the ubuntu sound.

When ever I login to my personal account I don't hear the ubuntu login
sound, but when I login to the guest user account I hear the sound. I'm
not sure if is some kind of app I install or what, but I also had this
problem with ubuntu 10.04.

I'd also like to express my frustration with this decision. I'm quite
happy using DejaVu now, but I can't help but feel a little upset that I
had to go to a good deal of trouble figuring out why my favorite
programming font went away because someone else felt that its
availability Vera did little
I'm running Jaunty 9.04 server and think something similar might have
happened to me when I restarted my UFW firewall. I was also running
tshark at the time.
So I'm guessing you might be able to reproduce this by locking down your
firewall while you have an NFS mount.
