I've been getting this problem very recently as well, and it has become
a very big nuisance.
I use VLC to open my mp3s.
also, you can quickly restart nautilus by using "pkill nautilus"

i also have this problem. ubuntu w/ gnome system, no kde. didn't try
changing the refresh rate and all, just one day my desktop started
showing the contents of my user folder instead of my desktop folder (on
startup). clicking on desktop brings me to my user folder. Desktop
folder exists in my user
xrandr now doesn't crash compiz.
still leaves artifacts behind on both metacity and compiz though. unable
to capture it using screenshot, so i'm thinking it might be a driver
issue?

sounds like the "Dim display when idle" option?
System -> Preferences -> Power Management -> Uncheck "Dim display when
idle" in both AC and Battery tabs.

actually if i remember correctly this is a security feature in firefox.
say for instance, a website asks you to type in "something" in a text
box, and then press enter. if the webpage downloads something when you
press "g" and askes you to run the file, and you press enter, then the
file runs. bad

"xrandr -o right" crashes compiz, and when rotating with metacity, ugly
artifacts are left behind (that arn't shown in a normal screenshot).
xrandr -o normal brings it back to normal though, with no ugly
