Stumbled upon this problem when trying to install some packages which
require build-essential to compile them (sidewinderd and ezthumb to be

Hello,
I don't have access to the original notebook, but I juste received a
similar one with the same problem on 8.10.
Just tested it with Jaunty Alpha3, and there the network works fine.
Also a boot to Jaunty works like a boot to Vista : if I reboot from
there to 8.10, the network works fine.

Strange enough, after working with smbfs more than 2 months without any
problems, I got the same situation (HAL initialize errors) starting on the date
I added an ntfs partition to my fstab as well.
Which logfiles should I look at ?
