Possible reason / resolution:
I installed ubuntu-desktop, updated software sources, removed the "main"
source which gave errors by replacing archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu with
ports.ubuntu.com -- now the upgrade process works.
So, possible reason for the upgrade to fail was : bad software source,

am using a bare-bones console install. Upgrade from Hardy to Lucid went
off OK with sudo do-release-upgrade. But the upgrade from Lucid to
Precise failed. Log files attached.
