The following also worked for me:
sudo /sbin/alsa force-reload
I'm using Hardy on an Everex StepNote ST5340T notebook. I never had this
problem with Gutsy.

Are you using wpa or anything like that? Have you tried the RUtilT wireless
utility?

All you need to do is compile the rt73 serial monkey drivers and it starts
working.
