Just to add to WeatherGod's comment, I have got a bit further with it.
I had installed a feature called BlueProximity which, when I looked at
it, has some gnome-screen-commands as default actions. I'm still not
sure why it was affecting my computer though because my phone is not

gnome-power!
I noticed last night that if my phone was close to the computer (i.e. in my
poket) that the problem occurred and if the phone was some distance away (in

Since I posted this morning I have set all my screensaver and power settings to
'never', which did stop the problem then I went to ~/gconf.d and deleted the
contents and rebooted.
The problem has not occurred now for 5 hours so perhaps is fixed (let's see)
but I have no idea what the cause was.

After last night's update (15/11/09) my screensaver kicks in after a few
seconds of inactivity. The power settings are the same as they have
always been (15mins) and it always worked fine before today. I have

I edited the fdi manually to reflect the patch and it worked fine for me
suspending to ram (Fn+f4) but not to disk (Fn+f12). Suspend to disk
required a restart. It's not perfect but I can live with it.
It is one of the things that the ubuntu team (or lenovo guys) should
look at.

I've tried the solution posted by Prinknash and it seems to have worked
on my Thinkpad. On my Dell D510 it crashed gdm but worked after a
reboot. It hasn't worked on the Acer or Fujitsu though.

It happens for me too on all 4 machine where I run Ubuntu 8.04. These
are a Thinkpad T61p with wireless, a Dell D51 laptop with wireless, a

This seems to have reared its head again after the last updates to
evolution. Left clicking the clock once again hangs the panel. I do
not have evolution/google calendar linked and do not use evolution.
