I think I've been able to ascertain that the problem is not with the
light-themes package (though they too do have the issues I referred to
when used with Gnome Classic). Debian 6 and Ubuntu 10.04 don't have the
issue I describe, I've tested this twice with a couple of different
themes which don't
That's right, there is no issue in Unity of this description. I briefly
tried the 11.10 beta but I saw only options for Unity and Unity 2D
sessions so I can't comment. I could be mistaken but I didn't see an
option for a Gnome Classic login with 11.10.
I feel a bit concerned that this aesthetic is

Public bug reported:
With some themes if you right-click on panel applet icons on the right
hand side like the clock, volume icon etc (for example to remove an

As of 9.04, the font rendering in regular Ubuntu has been perfect,
possibly better than Windows and certainly better than Mac.
Mysteriously other distros have not plundered whatever file is
responsible and still have the ugly colour fringing still present in
Ubuntu 8.10.

Public bug reported:
For the last two editions of Kubuntu my means of getting online, with
Mobile Broadband dongles (first Vodafone, then T-mobile, but also '3'
which I had briefly) has been impossible. I set up the connection with
the same settings as I'd use in Gnome's Network Manager, but when
It transpires that the problem is to do with the mobile broadband that many of
us now use. Its compression methods are what mangled the files, though I have
now moved from Vodafone ot T-mobile with none of the symptoms.
You can close the bug I filed. Thanks.

I have just tried the same using the live CD (a CD verified as free from
defects) with the same results, so it's definitely a bug rather than any
installation problems. Would be pleased to hear that the team have
found the same results. Thanks.
