Thanks very much for this info.
I tried your idea of sudo depmod -a and this cleared all the problems except
the one of the installation of the new kernel image itself.
I tried sudo apt-get install linux-image-2.6.24-21-generic but no...
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade produce
