I too was having problems with my contacts & Akonadi, I found here:

is the fix for now:
The problem is related to the content of the ~/.config/akonadi/akonadiserverrc.
The file is ceated with "Options" line like :

Also with me Prism seems to be the culprit. After uninstalling Prism Firefox
works again.

I've noticed this for some time now, I'm using Kubuntu 9.04 64 bit.
Today the update-notifier-kde is using 217 MB long after I checked for updates.
If I don't kill the process it remains until either shut-down or reboot.
