I am also having this problem. Pulseaudio Volume control responds to sound (visual meter), but I have no sound. I've done all three of the suggestions above and still no luck. I ran an apport-collect (above). My upgrade on my workstation was fine, my laptop -- no sound. Sound card is Intel 82801
