Also hapenned to me when i upgraded my kernel in ubuntu 12.04 and now
with a fresh install on 12.10. Smart runs ok. But my question is, if
it's a general kernel problem, why there ins'y more people being
affected?

i was trying to fix this issue for days with a rt2870 chipset. on kernel
2.6.32.21-generic on ubuntu 10.4,
the ra0 interface was uploaded and it could scan the networks, but it
was impossible to connect.
I finnaly made it by leaving the RT2870STA.dat empty (with a #) and
rebooting the system.

i reaaly thinking to give up on ubuntu. maybe going to debian-based AVLinux
distro.
