I was able to downgrade the nvidia packages by first stopping sddm via:
sudo systemctl stop sddm.service
I am running kubuntu though. If you're on Ubuntu it is not sddm but
lightdm, I guess.
Then:
sudo apt install {nvidia-opencl-
icd-361,nvidia-352,nvidia-361}=361.42-0ubuntu2
And reboot!

That looks promising.
Same Problem here after upgrading to 9.10.
I get it to accept my password if I first punch the keyboard like a monkey, hit
backspace a sufficient number of times, type in my password and then hit enter.
But it takes me usually about 3 iterations of that until that works.
