Just a "me too" here. Bad flickering in darkened areas after a return
from an idle screen shutoff with the radeon drivers on a MBP 8,2 and
Unity on 11.10. None of the above fixes worked for me

I can consistently cause a system lockup on my machine if I mute the mic
in pulseaudio and then try to log into my skype account. This is
probably a skype bug, but it definitely shouldn't crash the entire OS,
and I'm listing it here as I've never seen it with alsa.

Yep, wasted two days trying to figure out what broke it. So far I have
tried:
- Installing all the natty mactel ppa debs
- Uninstalling all the natty mactel ppa debs
- Adding Option "RegistryDwords" "EnableBrightnessControl=1" to my Device
section
- Installed pommed
- Downgrading g-p-m
- Kernel
Seeing this too on 11.04 and MBP 8,2. I could have sworn the backlight
worked right after install, then never since.

I wanted to see if the e1000e driver was the culprit so I recompiled the
e1000e kernel module for 2.6.28-19 with 2.6.24's code. The problem did
not go away; I still had the same issues.
Anyone have any idea why it would work flawlessly on 2.6.24-21, but not
on anything later?

until the link light turns on.

Update to previous solution: I would still get crashes once in a blue
moon when something would take over /dev/dsp. Thus, I decided to
recompile alsa(1.0.16) without oss support; have not had a firefox crash
since.
The only drawback is no OSS, which isn't an issue for me.
