This problem still exists in Karmic Alpha4 64bit. The only difference
I've noticed is that Firefox renders consistently fine now. But in Gnome
menu and other apps (I've tried Nautilus and Text Editor) characters
often render as squares.

Yes, Jaunty 64x still has the same problem on this hardware. Mostly I'm
running MythTV on this box, so I've been able to live with unusable
Gnome so far (MythTV renders without any issues btw).
I'll try Karmic 64x live CD this weekend. I've found the link to Karmic Daily

While upgrading from Gutsy 64x to Hardy, Distribution Upgrade hangs at packages
samba-common and bash-completion. The "top" command indicates extensive CPU and
swap usage by "ucf". After I press Ctrl-C the upgrade continues. Please see
