Workaround - create blank files on the removable drive named
".Trash-1000", ".Trash-1001", and so on as needed. Since it cant create
a folder because a file already exists with the same name, it asks if it
can permanently delete. At least this worked for me with a FAT32 SD
card.

I found a method that seems to effectively eradicate tooltips on a Fedora forum:
Create a file in your user directory called ".gtkrc-2.0"
The file should contain the following "gtk-enable-tooltips = 0"

I think Paul's point is well made. What if the Compiz guy looks at this
and says "The desktop switcher is the only thing that has tooltip

I have this issue on a netbook running karmic. As a few others may have
pointed out, this should not depend on the password being typed in at
login. Some of use use auto-login for young children that have trouble
with passwords.
