I can reproduce this on 8.10. My fstab looks like:
//venus/home/mnt/venushome cifs

doing a "cd" into a mounted directory triggers a (usually immediate)
kernel panic. Kernel version is

This is not an ubuntu bug, it turned out to be a mis-configured NIS
setup - specifically, having "nisplus" in nsswitch.conf. Removing this
keyword on the hosts line fixed things.

I tried a clean install of edgy, and that didn't work either. That makes me
think this is not a client issue but a network library compatibilit
