Also, another note. Running the xev application to see events renders no
activity for either of the buttons. They do however scroll up and down
in xev's output.

I have the exact same issue as in this report. Plugging the modem back
in and out a few times sometimes works. Otherwise it's reboot. And I
noticed that when it doesn't work, the modem stays on vendor 12d1 p
