This bug is still present. I used the original fix from over a year ago
(nvidia-xconfig then nvidia-settings). Why so hard to add a prompt to
run nvidia-xconfig to the .deb package when it's installed if there's
not a valid xorg.conf on the system? Hours of frustration here.

I also have this problem of no sound with ALSA. It worked under pulse,
but pulse caused issues with wine, so pulse got the boot. Are
suggestions to use the 64 bit version coming from developers? If so,
why is a broken version the default one supplied in the repos at all? Is

shell, start up portmap, manually mount the NFS share then
I have this issue to on HP pavilion dv2700. I also agree with kkhan.
At the very least users with this chipset should be informed at some
point during installation that there are issues and a possible fix
exists, instead of having to resort to google, etc.

changing the owner. I agree that this problem shouldn't be happening

Apparently at some point during the hardy upgrade the loopback device
auto-start configuration was removed. Adding
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
to /etc/network/interfaces fixes the problem. Noticed same hangs
happened with some other programs like gthumb and totem.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately running with the
-ProfileManager flag doesn't help; firefox hangs at exactly the same
place:
