Ok, finally figured out this was due to 'wrong' version of lzma (9.07).
Seems to be incompatible with (some?) deb packages.
After making sure lzma 4.43 is used, everything works great!

The update manager keeps bugging me to update Open Office, but when I do
the update, it fails. No matter if I empty the cache and download the
files again, always the same.
