Public bug reported:
In python2.6 2.6.1-1ubuntu1 on jaunty, distutils has been patched to
make a bare 'python setup.py install' use /usr/local instead of /usr
(distutils-install-layout.dpatch). The problem is that this also
prevents me from using distutils to install a python module to somewhere
l
I'd just like to point out that this bug isn't really fixed. That crash

compiz doesn't start if metacity compositor is enabled
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/178953
You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu
Bugs, which
I am no expert at this, but the problem seems to be quite simple:
xrender_unmanage_screen in src/compositor/compositor-xrender.c always
calls meta_screen_unset_cm_selection which calls XSetSelectionOwner with
None as the owner. It should only do this when giving up the compositor
selection manually
The problem you're having (probably) is that General Options>Display
Settings>Detect Outputs is not enabled so it's using the default value
of 640x480+0+0. (/apps/compiz/general/screen0/options/detect_outputs in
gconf)
