I believe you are using Ubuntu 8.10...? Upgrade to Ubuntu 9.04 via the update
manager.
Using 9.04 Pidgin works fine...if you want to stay with 8.10 I do not know of
any fix.

from you (not one fixed it).
However I did receive ONE email from "ipmawan" who provided a solution that

Yes I can reproduce the problem. All I have to do is put a DVD in.
Some just hang and do not advance while others are just scrambled (tiles).
I downloaded the codecs it suggested and they still do not play.
