ohh. an i dont know if i can report knetworkmanager bugs here, but i
think that program can give me a reason for not starting (right now if i
start knetwrkmngr when it is already started it just seems to return to
the prompt without an error).

i have the same problem (quite clean kubuntu 7.04)... restarting as
sarah suggests works, but this should not be needed for a desktop OS.
now my wireless seems to've started working.

i did read that zack (of KDE and Qt fame) is working on a shell over these
buggy/binary/close-source/proprietary plugins so they can no long crash their
host apps. you can read it yourself here:

i forgot to mention that if i run knetworkmanager (as the default user,
or as root) it returns back to the prompt in a millisecond: apparently
without doing anything.

okay, for me knetworkmanager (knw) runs out of the box, recognizes my
network card (MacBook) and helps to get me online in both wireless and
wired setups.
Yet is often just disappears from the system tray, or it does not come up at
all.
Like right now the icon is not in the tray. ps gives me:
