This issue appears to be present again on kernsl 3.13 (all) 3.16 (all)
and 3.17 (all)
upon shifting sata link power from min_power state to max_performance
state all kernels report various forms of this error:
[ 45.200582] ata3.00: exception Emask 0x10 SAct 0x8000 SErr 0x5 action
0xe froze
One Additional note, when shifting from high_performance to low_power
modes of operation, no errors are encountered. It only seems to happen
when going from a low to high state.

Ok, so there is a work around, it appears the problem exists in power
management within KDE.
Enter system settings, power management, then enable all power
management on all tabs (applying it as you go through them), then
disable it again.
This _should_ correctly disable DPMS and power management
I'm hitting this bug as well, it seems that DPMS does turn off, however
something keeps re-enabling it. I've disabled it every place I can find
short of xorg.conf hack to completely kill it.

Hi,
I don't believe that dimmer control has much affect here. As stated in
the OP even xset dpms direct commands fail to sleep or suspend the
screen. More than likely this is a bug in the kernel, as the latest
nvidia drivers in earlier kernel versions would work successfully.
That said, I'm ha

This problem seems to be exacerbated by files requiring many opens and
closes and reads and writes (such as program locks).
I've noticed this the most with files generated by skype.

I'd like to point out that I am seeing data corruption events due to
this issue. It appears that once the files are mangled they cannot be
decrypted and end up showing up as null. This is a very serious problem
as there is no way to retrieve the data.
