My system starts giving error messages in kern.log and eventually
becomes completely unresponsive to all but a ping from another machine.
Usually it's when I'm trying to do some video encoding with mencoder,
though not always.

I agree with Jesse and Huygens. I tried to view the smb conf files side
by side but the system crashed. I had samba working well before teh
security/ fix attmepted installatin, but now I have to ago back ad
figure it out again. It is unclear wht I am supposed to do to get back
to operatinal status.
My experience with the FF freezes are pretty similar to those described
above: if you click a link while a flash vid is playing, it hangs. If
you try to close a page with a flash vid playing, it hangs. Those are
very reproducible. And then there are those hangs while playing flash
vids which see

You're right! Mine uses snd-hda-intel too...disabling sound solves the problem
(as does going back to the 2.6.17 kernel).

I'm not sure this is exclusively related to that particular audio
device; I have the same problem...however, my results:
