Because of this behaviour, sometimes I shutdown inadvertitely my computer:
hitting quicly Alt then S, then enter..
There should be some command filtered out from HUD, like shutdown, logout, lock
screen.

In my case, check_gl_texture_size causes the gnome-settings-daemon to stop
loading the desktop session.Aftrer killing the process, the session continues
to load.
I've upgraded to 12.04 4 days ago. My laptop uses Intel Graphics with i915
module.

I've the same issue in 9.10 final. I think the problem could be
somewhere in the configurations of the gstreamer backend. If you run
gstremer-properties, then go to the Video tab, you can test the output.
