Same problem here. I've always created two users with UID 501 and 502,
because these are the first UID created on MacOSX. And I need to
exchange some data between users on ubuntu and osX (double boot).

I opened this bug almost 2 years ago, and I see that the ati driver now
works with 3d on my G5. Bug almost closed.
In fact, it may have worked for a long time now. But I didn't know. The
last comments did let me find a solution. I didn't have X11 crash at
startup with Feisty and Gutsy, but a blank
Downgrading xserver-xorg-video-ati from 1:6.6.3-2ubuntu3 to
1:6.6.2-0ubuntu6 solves the problem.

Kernel bug ?
I've tried the video=ofonly option and I surely can start X with the ati
driver this way (though only in 680x480 only and no compiz).
But :
- my kernel for now is 2.6.20-12-powerpc64-smp
- I've just tried to boot with 2.6.20-9 (herd5 kernel) (and after 2.6.20-11),

I had the same bug in breezy on my 2*2.0ghz G5 (powermac7,3)and I compiled the
2.6.14 kernel. It ran fine.
This bug was said to be solved in dapper and I upgraded my system. Same bug.
My own kernel did not run anymore. I've compiled 2.6.16 (and got random
hangs) and finally 2.6.17. Now I've got
