1] Try the live CD before installing.
2] Check if the basic hardware is working from the live cd.
3] If yes go ahead installing it, if not then don't install.
Only trust the Ubuntu LTS versions.

Today I built a new custom amd64 kernel from 2.6.36 sources.
I Installed it on my Ubuntu 10.10. I restarted my Ubuntu with new custom kernel
and checked "aplay -l" still it was showing.
device_list:235: no soundcards found...
Even inside the new kernel (2.6.36) I am getting some kernel mess
I am daily updating my ubuntu 10.10 desktop with linux-alsa-driver-modules.
Still no luck.
Will this be fixed in next kernel version?

I have a 32 bit Karmic system that I run headlessly. Alsamixer works
fine as long gnome is running, but fails to load if gdm is shutdown
# sudo stop gdm
# alsamixer
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or
directory
Restarting gdm makes no diffe

I see this bug with a logitech cordless desktop wave pro keyboard and mouse.
When the mouse stops working, special keys on the keyboard also cease to
function. It happens with any window manager, gnome, kde or xmonad. Restarting
X will occasiaonally fix it. Usually a reboot is required.

Correction, XF86AudioPause or XF86AudioPlay is not assignable in only
some apps. Keyboard and mouse settings lets you use that key, usable in
kopete also. Have not tested any other apps. However, still unassignable
in kaffeine, Amarok & Amarok 2.

Possibly not an Amarok bug, cannot assign XF86AudioPause or
XF86AudioPlay for anything, however Amarok 1.4.9 still detects
Play/Pause.

Amarok 2 does not recognize XF86AudioPause or XF86AudioPlay, I am able
to set all other multimedia keys correctly. Amarok 1.4.9.1 recognizes
both those keys correctly.

Importance
Distribution upgrade does not solve this problem, you need to recompile
the kernel manually. And you seem to have commented on the wrong bug,
Bug#252291 is the bug for the older kernel, this is the bug for the
newer version.
