I ran into a similar problem with my Asus K55A laptop. Initially, I was
playing around with 12.04 and Fedora 17 and the brightness hotkeys were
working. Later on, I went to test Windows 8 on it, I wiped out the
partitions on it. However, I did have to do a BIOS update on it. Later

I can confirm this issue as well, but only if I'm using a custom
resolution.
For instance, if I use my default resolution (1280x1024), then bzflag
works. However, if I adjust it down to 1024x768 in the catalyst control
center, then the error appears.

I can also confirm that this issue happens in 11.04. Here's what I
wanted to do:
I have a game called Myst III that comes in a 4-cd set. If I pop in the
first cd, it mounts and I'm able to read from it. However, if I put in
the second cd, it doesn't mount it and I can't do a full install.

Just to add on my previous comment: One way to get around this is to
have another application open full-screen. For instance, if Chromium is
up and I launch LxTerminal, there's a brief flash of black, but then it
disappears right away.

I've had a similar problem so far in Lucid, but it's an on and off type
of situation. Sometimes the splash screen will appear and sometimes it
won't. More than likely it's something with Plymouth.
