I'm having this problem also. Running Jaunty, all up to date.
I notice that gnome-panel is being started up with arguments as follows:
gnome-panel --sm-config-prefix /gnome-panel-svkHHa/ --sm-client-id
103a4ad18dff7eaf7012452818144070730036800023 --screen 0
notice that "--screen 0" bit.
I don't know if it's related, but I'm also having problems with the
latest firefox and firebug. Firefox seems to work OK, but in firebug if
I disable a bit of css and then try to re-enable it, a chunk of the css
dissapears, including the bit I was experimenting with.

I think the problem is with HAL.
Starting from a typical system state, I inserted a store-bought DVD, and
then recorded the following:

/dev/sda5 148G 120G 22G 85% /
tmpfs1012M 0 101
Charles Atkinson, I don't think your problem is the same as that of the
Original Poster. The OP's report does not have the 'attempt to access
beyond end of device' error message which you and I have. See this post
for a bit more analysis of the problem by me:

There are a lot of reports like this in the forums. I haven't yet found
an answer.
As with others, this started with a system upgrade, in my case from
hardy to intrepid. I'm running kernel 2.6.27-11-generic. I'm getting
similar, but not identical results to most other people, and maybe this

I don't think this is the same bug as 214413. eg the text "attempt to
access beyond end of device" doesn't seem to occur in the dmesg output
people list there.

Feisty has a new version of ktechlab and I think of the library that was
out of date that was causing the PIC component to be unavailable.
Now I can add a PIC to a circuit, but when I go to load the code for the
PIC, the ktechlab GUI freezes, with all available CPU being used by
ktechlab. It loo
I just noticed that ktechlab 0.3-5 for feisty looks like it probably
addresses this issue. I'm looking forward to a bakport to edgy.

I'm seeing the same thing.
I think what's happened is that we've got a ktechlab that has been
compiled without gpsim support, and hence simulating PICs in circuits is
disabled.
If I've understood things correctly this is because ktechlab requires a
later version of gpsim than ubuntu supplies (I'm
