I can confirm it as well for ubuntu 7.10.
I can add that the problem started to occur on my pc after I
1. did place the default low panel to the left and
2. changed its behaviour to autohide:yes
After that, gnome-panel will slowly eat up more and more cpu and memory,
wasting 170mb RAM + 50% @2
With virtualization in mind, the general problem appears to be that a
client process (Xen, VMware etc) should be able to talk to a USB device
with a minimum of signal/data/protocol interpretation from the kernel. A
"pass through"-mode ?

The USB device itself is a piece of HW with two cables with X-Ray
sensors attached, used in dentist practice. Brand: Schick. There are
drivers available for Windows 2000. I intend to run W2K as a Vmware
guest under Ubuntu Feisty Fawn with the device attached. So far, Ubuntu
