It is reproducible apparently. I don't know if it's really a bug but
it's confusing, especially for inexperienced users.

This bug still exists in Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04, with Firefox 3.0.13 and
even with 3.5. Applet windows simply cannot be closed.

Exactly the same thing happened to me.
I'm on Ubuntu 9.04. Here is the terminal output :

I have exactly the same behavior on a fresh install of Ubuntu Intrepid.
Thunderbird lauched correctly only once, then became unusable.
Installing thunderbird-gnome-support changed nothing.
Tried to remove, purge and reinstall thunderbird package but the problem still
persist.
