I managed to fix the problem. The IMAP server I used was configured to
store the message index in memory. Now I set it to store indexes on the
disk, and the problem disappeared. This bug report should probably be
closed.

Yes, the bug is still there with the latest Feisty update, however, it
might be the problem of the imap server I use. Anyway, my kmail version
is 3.5.6-0ubuntu6. (The server is sarge's dovecot, version
0.99.14-1sarge0, just in case somebody else has a chance to confirm
this)

Just try and disable superkaramba and see if it helps. You can always
turn off dpms by "xset -dpms" but I really suspect superkaramba.

Do you use superkaramba? Here the problem is gone on both computers (ATi
and nVidia) since I stopped using superkaramba and disabled DPMS. My GLX
is set up with the ATi driver at home but as I mentioned at work I have
an nVidia box which had the same bug, but I stopped using superkaramba

Trying to investigate the cause, I'm starting to suspect the bug is
related to lack of desktop activity for a time period. Last time it
happened after ~2 hours of inactivity. Screensaver was disabled, next I
disable DPMS to see if it has any effect.

changes to that of another mail. I know it sounds strange, so I attached
an animated gif that shows what happens. You can see that in the second
frame when I select the second mail

I can confirm Philipp's report, the i8042 boot options did not help.
I'll try Herd 2 when I have some time. In the meantime, here's a diff
between two dmesgs. The first boot is a normal PS2 boot which results
in no keyboard. The second boot was exactly the same but I kept pressing
Ctrl to make it
Just for reference, here's dmesg when the keyboard is connected to USB.
And to answer your question, yes, edgy is still affected. I'm using
2.6.17-10-generic #2 SMP and the problem report is valid for this kernel
too. The box is a HP dc7600C.
