I've similar problems (don't know if it's the same cause):
If I wait some seconds, Nautilus hangs when browsing a folder with an .svg
inside, probably while creating the icon preview.
If I disable icon preview it works fine.
I've already posted it in:

Here's the output:

The avscan program comes from Ubuntu universe repositories...
Anyway, now I've seen it happens *whenever* I 1) open a shell window, 2)
launch a program from it and then 3) close the shell window (caus
If I leave system monitor open while working often some ended processes remains
in the list, apparently random.
Anyway there's a way I can trigger this bug every time, I do the following:
- launch gnome system monitor
- open a shell window and launch avscan program from the command line, start a

I'm using "ATI" driver, my card is Radeon RV100 QY [Radeon 7000/VE], the way I
reproduce this lock-up is posted some comments above. I've rebooted with
alt+sysreq and attached Xorg.0.log.old.
Hope it helps. :-)

I still have this bug!!
I have Feisty, too, with all the updates.
Sometimes it happens while opening/closing CD tray: I was opening many CDs
(with System Monitor running) and switching to System-Monitor I noticed 10-11
"eject" uninterruptible processes listed.
They were all inexistent: top comma
I think this is duplicate or related with bug #118605 and bug #119635
I had similar freezes but, at least in my case, disabling the composite
extension completely resolved the problem.

Workaround:
setting AlwaysRestartServer=true in gdm.conf solved the issue with garbled

Sorry, I forgot to say, for complete information, that the system was not
"completely" freezing:
I couldn't do ctrl+alt+backspace, but I *could* still reboot with alt+sysreq+

I've found a workaround too:
At least in my case the problem was with the composite extension.
**Disabling composite extension completely solved the problem: no more freezes
on logout.**
(you say goodbye to desktop effects, too... :-( I can live without)

Update:
At least in my case the problem was with the composite extension.
**Disabling composite extension completely solved the problem: no more
freezes on logout.**
Anyway it didn't freeze always, only when logging in with 2 users,
opening certain programs, and then logging out one of the user..

Lock screen and switch user freeze in Feisty

You received this bug notification because
I've quite the same bug, I paste a description:
it completely FREEZES my system 100% of the times (let's see if it's a
common issue):
1- Reboot the system and login (don't try it with open programs as you can
loose your data)
2- Go to the "power off" menu and choose "SWITCH USER"
3- Login as a d
Forgot to say: I'm using the Opensource driver ("ati"), and NOT the restricted
one.
- video card ATI Radeon 7000.
- ubuntu feisty
- "ati" driver
So the problem affects the basic driver, too.

I've exactly the same problem and some more hints too:
1) Happens when using desktop resolution lesser than the max. available
2) After logging out/switching the login screen is ok until I move the mouse
pointer to the right/bottom border of the screen: it looks like if it's trying

I think this is duplicate of bug #38915
It's not a problem with restricted driver...
I have really similar problems (ATI card too, radeon 7000) and I use the
*opensource* ("ati") driver, NOT the restricted one...
(the restricted driver doesn't support my card model anyway).
