I don't use ruby, so I don't see that problem. What I do see is that the
tests from gdal.org will segfault unless you build with gcc-4.2, at
least on Intrepid. I don't have the same issue on Hardy.

FWIW, gdal's own tests fail with the packages as distributed. Output
including segfault attached.
