My laptop (Acer Aspire 5560) also suffers from this issue.
A few instances of a script that does "ls" in an endless loop can bring my cpu
temp to 95C. At that point it smells like melting plastic so I stop the
scripts.

yes, seems its a duplicate.
As mentioned in bug #91265, this seems to be a permission problem.
I've been able to access the camera using both workarounds:
reopening gthumb as root:
$ sudo gnome-volume-manager-gthumb %h
or (my preferred, since I don't need to change the imported files permission
I've reported a (probably) related Bug #117247 on powershot S3-IS.
For me, the "import photos" doesn't hang but neither works.
It's not clear that this is the same problem, so will not mark it as duplicate
for now

- Upon connection, the "camera import" dialog opens.
- Pressing the "import photos" button will open the "import photoes" dialog. In
